The Skimtrol has an adjustable Speed Control on it to allow the pool owner to have any automatic cleaner travel at the right speed and this also allows some skimming of the surface.

The more you turn the control clockwise the quicker the cleaner will travel and less surface skimming will happen.

You don't want the cleaner traveling at break neck speed, it just wears out the cleaner more quickly.

If you have an automatic cleaner that has a small speed control supplied with it, ditch this when you install a Skimtrol. The hole in the Skimtrol where the vac hose is designed to accept a 38mm Hose Cuff. 

The rubber Weir Hose adaptor that some cleaners come with will also fit into this hole. If you wish to use the Skimtrol to vacuum manually, then just turn the Skimtrol upside down.
